Les Village reef - before restoration

Les Village, in a remote corner of Bali, needs a new reef.

Through poor management and fishing practices – like cyanide fishing – their reef has been devastated. But help is on the way. You can join the Human Laboratory Project and help to reconstruct their reef. This joint venture between Sea Communities, an Indonesian social agency helping to improve the lives of poor rural villagers, and DiVo, an Australian charitable organisation, is helping to create sustainable livelihoods for the villagers with improved fishing practices and resource management. A part of this initiative is to help rebuild their reef.

Volunteers will stay in the village (also helping by adding income through accommodation and hospitality) in an en-suite beachside cottage and their trip includes 4 days diving including tank fills, a water management tour of the village and its waterfall, three meals a day, and taking part in underwater coral and fish surveying. Part of the trip fee goes towards the ‘Adopt A Coral’ program, which helps villagers pay for the ongoing reef construction. Trips are suitable for snorkelers as well.

Les Village reef - after

The villagers began the reef restoration by dragging heavy metal/mesh and concrete structures by boat about a 5 minute swim from shore. The coral, which is harvested selectively from nearby reefs, is replanted into these structures using concrete plugs with the coral sprigs attached by glue. Villagers have learnt the best ways to plant the coral so it sustains the least damage from storm and wave action and other environmental degradation. Volunteers will join this planting program.

These 7 day/6 night trips will be running all year from January 2013 – cost per person twin share $US1050 (approx $NZ1325). Pick up and drop-off is from the Denpasar area, ether from the airport or your hotel. Costs include transfers to Les Village, 6 nights beachside accommodation, 3 meals a day, tank fills, weights, tanks and survey equipment. Extras like alcohol, wi-fi, insurance and laundry are not included.
