This month we’ve gone to a new crisp, clean format. But the content will remain
the same (or hopefully better), with a variety of travel-related snippets and
information. It’s a quiet between-the-seasons time here at the moment but people
are already thinking about their next year’s holidays. In popular times like
school holidays it pays to book well ahead if you want to get the good spots.
Featured Accommodation – Noosa
We have access to some really good deals for apartments in Noosa at the moment.
Each property has a ‘Stay for 7 Pay for 5’ offer and the tariff includes transfers
from Brisbane airport. There are low- or mid-season rates running through almost
to Christmas – the mid-season rates come in for the October school holidays
and again in early December. The properties are Fairshore Apartments, Laguna
on Hastings and French Quarter Apartments and all are mid-range, quality properties.
Mary Poppins – the Musical
Here’s something for the whole family. Mary Poppins is coming to the Civic
in Auckland in October for a three month season. It’s a musical so you’ll get
all those catchy tunes and dance moves and is being put on in conjunction with
Disney, so it’s the real deal. We have 3 day/2 night packages that include
tickets to the show and either hotel or apartment accommodation.
Sir Richard Branson and his children will be among the first passengers when
the Virgin Galactic space tourism program takes off next year. Virgin boss
Branson and son Sam and daughter Holly are expected to fly 96km into space
on the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) aircraft on its inaugural flight in 2013. If you
would like to join them, prices for the two-hour flights start at $US200,000
pp. According to Virgin, 529 people have already signed up for the space program.
Abu Dhabi (“Father of the gazelle” in Arabic) is the capital city and the
largest of the seven Emirates making up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Covering
around 87 per cent of the UAE’s total land area, Abu Dhabi holds 94% of the
country’s oil reserves and, as the world’s fourth largest oil producer, contributes
10% of the world’s oil. The city’s progressive vision is tempered by a deep-seated
respect for traditions and culture. The artefacts and tools of its early inhabitants,
pearl divers, fishermen and dhow builders, are carefully preserved and displayed.
Especially honoured is the Bedouin way of life. Here’s the top 10 things to
• visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
• visit the parks and beaches of the Corniche
• while at the Corniche visit the Heritage Village
• and shop at the nearby Marina Mall
• try the Bateel dates, date juice or date syrup
• visit the traditional markets (souks)
• head out to the sand dunes and go for a dune-bash
• visit Jebel Hafeet, the emirate’s highest point
• take a sunset cruise on a dhow or luxury yacht
• eat out to enjoy Arabic cuisine and Turkish coffee
